ESTATE At 1,400 feet of elevation, on the southern edge of Mendocino County’s Sanel Valley, Topel Winery and Estate sits above the Russian River and its fog lines. One of our favorite winemakers historically is Mark Topel and when he retired, we thought that was the last of his gems that we would see. We were wrong, and pleasantly surprised to hear from the recently appointed new winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner who happens to be the former Head of Enology at Paul Hobbs Winery, about some dusty ole cases he unveiled from the library cellar!

In 1980’s, the Topel family discovered a 160-acre old sheep farm, deep in the hills west of Hopland. Continuing the of early heritage of Mendocino pioneers and recognizing the perfect growing conditions for Bordeaux varietals, this hillside vineyard was planted in rugged high-altitude terrain in ’89.
