'The Talented Mr. Ripley' review by Julie Wright • Letterboxd
It ends up as a dismayingly The Talented Mr. Ripley often feels like an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. But even in his boldest pushing of the envelope, Hitchcock avoided Ripley‘s homoerotic tension and extremely graphic violence. Furthermore, it’s disturbing how this film manipulates the audience into sympathizing with Tom Ripley. The Talented Mr. Ripley is extremely well-executed at most levels. The cast is exceptional throughout, and Matt Damon proves that he is quite capable of playing a sinister role convincingly. Playing the well-heeled, articulate Marge works well for Paltrow, displaying her usual regal presence.
